What is counselling?

Counselling aims to help you deal with and overcome issues that are causing pain or making you feel uncomfortable. It can provide a safe and regular space for you to talk and explore difficult feelings. Your counsellor is there to support you, they will respect your views and will not judge you. They will not give advice, but will help you to find your own insight and understanding of your problems.

How can I access counselling?

To find out more about the service please call 0117 935 1707 or email We will take your contact details and offer you an initial assessment appointment with one of our senior counsellors.

What is an initial assessment?

This is a meeting with a senior counsellor to discuss your needs and for you to ask any questions about the service. Together you will explore ways in which we might help you and what you might be hoping to get from counselling. If you both decide that counselling could be helpful, we will offer you this as soon as we can.

What happens after my assessment?

We will begin your counselling as soon as a space is available and we will keep you up to date on how long the wait may be. Your counselling will be at the same time and place each week with the same counsellor (although they may be different from the one you met at your assessment).

How long will I wait?

Currently the wait time for an assessment appointment is 6-8 months. The wait time for counselling is approximately 12 months after the assessment.

Is there help I can access while I am waiting for counselling?

There are a range of other local services which may be helpful while you are on our counselling waiting list.  You can visit our Information and Support page to find out more information about these options.

What if I am not ready for counselling?

Reflecting on yourself and your experiences in counselling can be painful.  If you or your counsellor feel it is not a suitable time for therapy, there are other types of services that may be helpful. We would recommend visiting the Survivor Pathway website to find out what is available in your local area.

It has been brilliant. I have felt valued which has really enabled me to grab hold of the things I have for so long not understood.
