Counselling in Bristol

Our Adults Service offers free counselling for anyone over the age of 18 who has experienced any form of sexual abuse at any point in their lives. Based in Bristol, our dedicated counsellors have extensive experience of working with trauma and the impact of sexual abuse.

How counselling can help

Counselling aims to help you deal with and overcome issues that are causing pain or making you feel uncomfortable. It can provide a safe and regular space for you to talk and explore difficult feelings. Your counsellor is there to support you, they will respect your views and will not judge you. They will not give advice but will help you to find your own insight and understanding of your problems.

Sexual abuse impacts people in lots of different ways and each client has their own individual circumstances but some of the common issues we regularly help people with include:

  • Anxiety and fear
  • Guilt and shame
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Low self esteem
  • Self harm
  • Suicidal thoughts and feelings

Counselling at The Green House

Our team of highly skilled counsellors are usually based at The Green House’s specialist therapy centre in St Paul’s, Bristol, and also offer a small number of sessions from Knowle West Health Park. However, due to government guidelines around Covid-19, we are currently offering remote counselling online or via telephone. We apologise for any inconvenience but we are not offering face to face counselling at this time

Your counselling sessions will last 50 minutes and will take place at the same time each week with the same counsellor.

Accessing the service

From January 5th 2021 we will be open to selfreferrals for remote counsellingonline or via telephone. Self-referrals can be made via phone or email.

Unfortunately, due to government guidelines and restrictions, we are unable to take referrals for face to face counselling at this time. We will update the website as and when this changes.

There is currently a waiting time of approximately 18 months for counselling. When you are nearing the top of the waiting list, we will contact you to offer an assessment with one of our highly experienced senior therapists.

We can only accept referrals from Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

Connect Sessions

In view of the current waiting time between referring into our service and receiving counselling we are now offering optional Connect Sessions for adult clients.

What is a Connect Session?

A one-off session lasting up to 30 minutes which provides adult clients with an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about counselling at the Green House and receive signposting support.

The Connect session is offered at the start of the referral process and if a client opts in our Client Referral and Engagement Worker will be in touch within 3 weeks to arrange an appointment. The sessions can take place over the phone, video call or face to face, depending on personal preference.

During the session our Client Referral and Engagement Worker will also share specific resources and signpost information that clients may find helpful, including useful helplines, websites, text services, apps, videos, books, guides and other relevant services and information.

The session will be followed up with an email outlining all the signposting and resources discussed. A feedback form will also be sent to help us evaluate and improve wherever possible. The next step will be waiting to hear from the team regarding your assessment.

What if I am not sure?

The Client Referral and Engagement Worker is more than happy to talk through any questions, queries and reservations you may have. If you decide that now is not the right time for a Connect Session, there is always an opportunity to opt in at a later date whilst on the waiting list. If you would like to ask any further questions regarding the Connect Sessions please email sam.chilvers@the-green-house.org.uk

It has been brilliant. I have felt valued which has really enabled me to grab hold of the things I have for so long not understood.
